Happy New Years!

We were big party animals this year and decided to stay in and have some friends over. We watched a movie and then played the Wii until the "wii" hours of the morning. Ok, not really into the wee hours, it was just until midnight, but it felt like the wee hours. A full nights sleep is a parents dream. So if I'm not going to get it I may as well have fun in the meantime, right?! :)

We had a great time together. We talked, watched a movie, ate chips and some AWESOME salsa, exercised with the Wii, clinked glasses of sparkling cidar at midnight while watching Dick Clark countdown. He was a little (lot) orange looking with all the makeup they put on him and he messed up the countdown, I think he said 14, 12, 10, 11, 10, 9, but he still rocks the Rockin New Years Eve Countdown!) It was memorable and relaxing.

Phil.

Laurie.

Jake.

Me!

Perhaps next year we'll get out and go to a party or something. Or maybe have one at our house???

P.S. Jacob signed "milk" today. He opened and closed his hand twice in the way little kids do when they are learning to wave bye-bye. It was SO CUTE! I remember when Shyla did it for the first time. She'd throw both her arms out as if she were startled and make little fists. *sigh*

The Next American Idol?

I'm not afraid to admit it, I'm a sucker for voting talent shows. All of them. American Idol. America's Best Dance Crew (ABDC). America's Got Talent. So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD). Dancing With The Stars. I can't help it. I'm drawn to them like dust on a bookshelf.

We sometimes let Shyla watch videos on YouTube, with monitoring from us of course. She enjoys looking for nursery rhyme videos, anything have to do with Barney, and Mickey Mouse stuff too! I'm not sure why but she's grown really fond of this partiular video. This video was from 12/10/09. She will see it showing in the list of videos to play and points and says, "I want dat one mommy!" How can I resist?

DISCLAIMER: Don't totally judge her singing voice. She was scratchy sounding because she was coming down with a cold and over the next few days she, myself, and Jacob all got sick. Jake got sick too a few days behind the rest of us. It made for "happy holidays".

He's Crawling

For several weeks/couple months Jacob has been pushing up to all four's and then rocking back and fourth. Or he'll reach for something on all four's, but wouldn't move his legs. Today that changed. He's crawling. He usually crawls faster when it's towards something he wants, i.e. the tv remote, his binky, my cell phone. Don't let him fool you though, even though he's figured out how to crawl, he still much prefers to sit and "people watch" and/or be held instead.

Jumping In Jumper

Jacob has been doing the same thing in his jumper that Shyla used to do, which is to sit in it and twirl around and people watch, but certainly no jumping. Today he intentionally started jumping in it. Ahhh, the familiar sounds that the jumper makes. It's so cute to watch a baby jump in one of these things and see the smiles on their face from having a grand 'ol time!

Ear Infection

Shyla got her first ear infection. It was bound to happen sooner or later. She was really crabby this morning and came into the office holding her ear saying it hurt. I had a feeling. I called the doctor and got her in quickly (thankfully). Jake took her so I could stay home with the baby and work on a few things. She got prescribed to medicines. Some numbing gel for the inside of the ear and an antibiotic. She takes it for 10 days, which I believe is pretty standard for antibiotics. She doesn't have her official 3 year well check for another month, but here are the current stats on her Visit Summary:

Temperature: 97.5 degrees

Weight: 30lb, 9.6oz

Update: After some meds and a nap, she is feeling better. I don't like it when my kiddos are in pain. I bet tomorrow she won't even remember her ear hurt.

Christmas Dinner

Our Christmas festivities are coming to a close, but they wouldn't be final without me making a turkey for dinner. Seems to be becoming the trend. I've done it a few years in a row now and each time I think I get better. *pat pat*

A little tid bit of information... when I took this shot, I waited for just the right moment and *click* I got it on the first try. Everyone smiling and no one blinking. AGAIN... *pat pat*. Hey! It's my blog, I can say whatever I want, haha!

After dinner we took some pictures and sat around chatting. Well, Jake and my dad played the Wii while the girls gabbed. It was a fun night! I appreciate all the help I got with dinner and cleaning up. It allowed me time to socialize. Thanks again.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT!

Christmas Morning

On Christmas Eve, Shyla put out milk and cookies for Santa to eat when he came down the chimney. You can tell in the picture she was E X H A U S T E D, but she didn't let that stop her. She was still energetic and running all around the house well after 11pm. We had gotten home late from dinner with the family in San Jose but still wanted to let Shyla put out the milk and cookies. She had been talking about Santa, the cookies, and the chimney for a while so we couldn't deprive her of it.
First thing when Jacob woke up he wanted to eat. Normally we'd give him some milk and cereal but just a bottle this morning so we could hurry and get to the presents. However, he had other plans. Here he is about 10 minutes after waking up... sleeping on the bottle! We woke him up and Shyla too before heading downstairs. Shyla was very excited to get to see if Santa came...
And he DID! He left her a stocking full of goodies! We found some decent stocking-stuffer type stuff in the $1 section at Target. There were marking pens, magnet dress up dolls, dry earse boards, brush w/ mirror, playdough, and a few other things for only a buck each... WOOHOO!
The kids enjoyed opening their gifts. Well Shyla enjoyed opening them, Jacob enjoyed eating the paper and getting into stuff. It was so fun this year to have Christmas morning. Last year Shy wasn't too into it yet. It was more exciting to just play with the toy no matter what it was. This year she was really excited about getting presents. She talked about it for a couple weeks before Christmas. She was excited to open them up and see what was inside. It was great to be able to be a source of happiness for her. You should've seen her little face just beam with each gift! I think I just felt a tug on my heartstrings!
Every year for Christmas... Jake spoils me. He hates it when I never spend and time or money on myself during the year because I'm always thinking about other people and buying things they would like. I scored big time this year! We both had wanted to buy games/accessories for our new Wii (thanks Candy!). We researched and researched the best places to buy the stuff and really tried to get the best deals. Well, I wanted to buy Wii Fit Plus but thought it would be more of a "me" game and I was trying to find something for Jake. Turns out Santa brought a gift for the family and it was none other than... Wii Fit Plus w/balance board! It would've been really funny if we both bought the same gift! We both love it and play it all the time.
The best gift I got was tickets to go see Wicked. The untold story of the witches of Oz. My favorite childhood movie is Wizard of Oz and I tend to gravitate towards things that have to do with it. I've been wanting to see Wicked for a long time and get a little bummed each time I hear someone went to go see it and I still hadn't gone yet. Jake is not really one for musicals... but he's going too... and I think he's secretly going to LOVE IT!
After opening presents, we ate breakfast. We're trying to perfect the best choice for Christmas breakfast that doesn't take to long to make. We're leaning towards blueberry pancakes and eggs.

Christmas Eve

This year we were able to spend Christmas Eve at Aunt Kathy's (Jake's dad's sister) in San Jose. We typically reserve this day to spend in San Jose (or Morgan Hill when dinner is at Uncle Mike's). Fun, food, family... do you need anything more? It was a long day for us and a late night for the kids. It was around 10pm by the time we got home and Shyla was ready to put out cookies and milk for Santa. She had a hard time going to bed, but once she did she zonked out! Just wait until the morning my precious child...
Great Grandma Fernandez with Jacob aka JD. It's always so sweet to see great grandparents with the little ones. He looks so happy too. He's a people lover (except for when he sees mommy on the other side of the room, then he wants to be with mommy). There was some time set aside to open presents for the kids. Jacob got a build-a-bear, clothes, and some learning toys. Shyla got dress-up Tinkerbell clothes, jammies, and electronic learning books. When she opened the Tinkerbell clothes, you can see it on her face in the picture, she said in such a sweet voice, "Oh my gosh!" What a sweetie!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE TO ALL OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

6 Months Old and He's Sitting

I'm a little late in posting this but on December 1st, Jacob turned 6 months old. Um, where did the time go? Didn't I just give birth so this little bundle of joy? At his 6 month well check he was due for shots. I wasn't planning on it but figured "why not" and decided to get him the H1N1 and seasonal flu shots (as well as for Shyla). When it came time for shots he had 5 needles! It's usually not that bad for me but I actually got teary eyed listening to him scream through all 5 shots! (Shyla was able to get one of the shots as a nasal mist and the other as a shot. I thought I was going to have a harder time with her shot being that she was older and I'd have to hold her down, which would in turn make me weepy... but she did better than I thought and I didn't shed one tear. Thanks for showing mommy how to be a strong girl, Shyla!)

Jacob's current stats (as of 12/1/09) are as follows:

14lb, 2.3oz (3.87% weight for age)
25 ½” (18.74% length for age)
17.01” head circ. (21% circ for age)

-loves to be on all 4’s and rock back and forth

-adores Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

-has moments when he loves to babble (usually in the evenings and also when food is present), though still relatively quiet

Back on 12/10/09 Jacob started sitting unassisted! He had been working at it for a few days and then one day he did it! What a milestone for him.
Now what possessed me to later on that day, without Jake or any extra help, to have a mini photo shoot with both kids is beyond me, but here are a few cute shots I was able to capture. I tried to teach Shyla a "sassy" pose, but it didn't quite work out. Sometimes the shots worked out nicely, sometimes they didn't. It was still a lot of fun and Shyla is starting to love when I take pictures of her. She always tell me to, "Go get your camera momma."

Time to call it quits! (What do you think?)

Shyla's Corner

We find the best things sometimes at the houses we have to clean out. Jake found this badboy recently and we cleaned it off and set it up for Shyla just before Christmas. She LOVED it and that's putting it mildly. You can't tell from the picture, but it was mighty cold outside. That didn't stop her. Sometimes I don't even think she can feel the cold. She wanted to play outside on her new "park" as she calls it. I feel bad though because it's cold and wet most days so between that and getting behind on cleaning up dog poop I haven't been able to let her play on it as much as she'd like. Soon though... Shyla has becomes quite the budding artist. Jake and I work a lot with her on her drawings. It seems to be something she's rather interested in. I used to draw a line down her easel. I'd draw on one side and she'd mimic what I drew on the other side. Well, one day she really wanted to draw faces, so with each face she drew, she'd tell me who it was and I'd write the name. When Jake got home she proceeded to proudly show off her drawing and tell him who each person was. And she got them all CORRECT! Go Shyla!Shyla loves to carry her brother around the house. I used to stop her from doing it. After one particular day of ALL DAY LONG telling her to stop, I gave up. I decided I can't stop her from doing everything, all the time, every day. I choose instead to show her how to lay him down gently so his head doesn't hit the ground. Voila! Now even though she carries him around she's careful about it and knows not to let his head hit the floor. (Now if I can just get her to not whack his head with her toys or squish his binky in his face we're making progress.)

On this day, I didn't hear any noise. I turned around and didn't see the baby. I called for Shyla and didn't hear her either. I yelled for her and ever so quietly I hear, "Yes mommy?". I walk until I can hear her and I find both kids in Shyla's playhouse on the other side of the house. She had carried him from the back family room across the entryway into the livingroom and dragged him into her house to play with her. Although she doesn't always show it, Shyla loves her brother SO MUCH! She talks about him all the time. Tells people about the new things he does. Brags about him going to the doctor, the foods he's eating, and that he sometimes pulls her hair. I pray that they will grow to always love and care for each other. And I pray that I can teach them that before my time here is over.
